Why a tooth may need to come out
Common reasons for extraction
We always look at whether a tooth can be saved first. Extraction is recommended when keeping it would risk your health or the teeth around it.
Wisdom teeth
Wisdom teeth removal, done comfortably
Wisdom teeth may be removed preventatively, or because they are infected, impacted or crowding your other teeth. We check their position with x-rays or a 3D scan and explain whether removal is recommended.
For more complex cases we offer oral and IV sedation, and deep sedation at select clinics, so you can relax through the procedure.
Signs to get them checked
- Pain or swelling at the back of the mouth
- Gums that are tender or bleed around a back tooth
- A bad taste or smell that won’t go away
- Crowding or shifting of other teeth
- Difficulty opening your mouth fully

Aftercare
Healing well after an extraction
Your dentist will give you personal instructions. These general tips help most patients recover comfortably.
First 24 hours
Bite gently on gauze, rest, and avoid rinsing, spitting or drinking through a straw so the blood clot can form.
First few days
Eat soft, cool foods, chew on the other side and take pain relief as advised. Don’t smoke.
After day one
Rinse gently with warm salt water after meals and keep brushing the rest of your teeth.
Planning ahead
Talk to us about replacing the tooth. An implant helps stop neighbouring teeth shifting and bone shrinking.
Questions
Extraction questions
Straight answers to the questions patients ask us most. Your dentist will go through everything that applies to you at your free consultation.
Do I need my wisdom teeth removed?
Not always. Wisdom teeth are usually removed when they are impacted, infected, decayed, crowding other teeth or causing pain, or preventatively when x-rays show they are likely to cause problems. Your dentist will check their position and explain whether removal is recommended.
How long is recovery after a tooth extraction?
Most people feel back to normal within a few days after a simple extraction; surgical and wisdom tooth extractions can take about a week. Rest for the first day, eat soft foods, and avoid smoking and drinking through a straw so the blood clot can protect the socket.
Should I replace a tooth after it’s extracted?
In most cases, yes. A gap lets neighbouring teeth drift and the jawbone shrink over time. A dental implant is the most natural-feeling replacement, and it can often be planned together with the extraction.
Do you offer sedation?
Yes, at three levels: minimal oral sedation (a pill taken before your appointment), moderate IV sedation, and deep sedation. Oral sedation is available at all our clinics and IV sedation at select clinics. Deep sedation is currently offered at our Burnaby clinic, where two sedation dentists are present throughout.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is needed. You can book a consultation directly with any of our clinics.
Can I get a second opinion on a quote from another dentist?
Absolutely. Bring your existing quote or treatment plan and we’ll review it, explain the options and give you our own recommendation.
